IN MEMORIAM
Dr Stuart Campbell (1949-2018)
After a short illness in 2018, Dr. Stuart Campbell, 68, passed away leaving behind his wife Svetlana and his step-sons, Georgy and Ivan.
Stuart Campbell studied Russian and Music at the University of Edinburgh and gained his PhD at the University of Glasgow. He helds the diplomas of Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and Associate of the Royal College of Music. He worked part-time as Music Subject Specialist in the Department of Adult and Continuing Education at the University of Glasgow, and also taught music-historical subjects in the Office of Lifelong Learning at the University of Edinburgh and at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
He compiled, translated and annotated two volumes of an anthology of criticism (Russians on Russian Music) published by Cambridge University Press in 1994 and 2003. He contributed entries on Russian topics to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, second edition, and on Russian and Scottish topics to Die neue Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, the dictionary’s German equivalent. He was a member of Editorial Board of the Critical Edition of the Complete Works of Sergei Rachmaninoff and a trustee of Musica Scotica.

Apart from being a musicologist, Dr Campbell was also an accomplished organist. He worked as Lecturer in Music, University Organist and Director of Chapel Music in the University of Glasgow from 1975 to 2000. He was also assistant organist and choirmaster at St Bride’s Scottish Episcopal Church, and was in demand as an accompanist.

Together with Svetlana, he was the joint artistic director and conductor of the choir Russkaya Cappella (Glasgow) since its foundation in 2009. Thanks to his hard work, the Cappella grew from a small collective of singers into a full choir, capable of handling truly complicated pieces and occupying a visible and important role in Scotland’s musical life.
